Graphic design students, alumnus earn national awards
The graphic design talents of three students and one alumnus of Pennsylvania College of Technology have been honored in the annual Flux Student Design Competition.
Graphic design seniors capturing awards are: Brandon M. Wolff, of Effort, “Best in Category Packaging” for Trailblaze Chocolates; Luke A. Bierly, of Centre Hall, “Merit Award in Packaging” for Prohibition DVD Set and “Merit Award in Identity” for Dynamite Doughnuts Brand Elements; and Alexis M. Botek, of Pottsville, “Merit Award in Packaging” for Brown Bear Chocolates.
Joseph N. Colyer, a 2018 graphic design graduate, earned “Best in Category UX/UI” for his Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance project created when we was a Penn College student. (UX refers to “user experience” and UI relates to “user interface.” UX/UI design focuses on user experience and usability related to electronic devices and software.) Originally from Selinsgrove, Colyer is a designer at Two by Four, an advertising agency in Chicago.
All design work for the competition was created in 2018 and the winners were recently announced. With 126 projects honored from 896 entries, it was one of the largest and most competitive of Flux competitions.
Flux is a national competition recognizing outstanding design work produced by college students in the categories of identity, packaging, poster, publication, social impact design, UX/UI, and video, television and motion graphics. The awards are sponsored by AIGA Blue Ridge, a chapter of AIGA, a national professional design association.
Penn College graphic design students and alumni consistently earn recognition in regional, national and international advertising design competitions.
An exhibition of graduating seniors’ graphic design work will be held April 30 through May 10 in The Gallery at Penn College. “Graphic Design: 2019” will feature an opening reception on Friday, May 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
